Houston has great weather. But it can also get very humid (up to 75%). It also gets a fair share of rain. Unfortunately, these conditions make the area a great breeding ground for mold. A sizable number of Houston-area homes and businesses wrestle with mold.
Mold can have disastrous effects on one’s home and health. Consider the following: mold grows by releasing spores (another term for their reproductive cells) into the air. Just because these spores are invisible to the naked eye does not mean they cannot do damage. As long as there are ample moisture and oxygen, these spores will grow anywhere. Common places where mold is found are on tiles, sheetrock, wood, attic, window ledges, gutters, vents, and even fabric. Home and business owners are often shocked at the extent of the mold infestation present in their buildings.
If inhaled in sufficient quantities mold can cause wheezing, coughing, headaches, allergy-like symptoms, runny nose, eye irritation, throat irritation, and even difficulty breathing. Some studies have even linked mold to asthma in children.
In certain cases, mold is clearly visible. For example, when it occurs in places such as bathroom tiles, under the sink, or in the gutter area on your walls. These are all places that provide ample moisture.
But there are instances where mold is present but not visible. One way is when your home or business has a moldy smell even though you cannot see the mold.
Another instance is where you have a water leak. Because mold needs moisture to flourish, a hidden water leak can provide the perfect environment for mold to multiply.
Other areas include behind appliances such as a dishwasher, refrigerator, and water heater or pump. Here mold can thrive undetected and continue to wreak havoc.
As we are well aware, the Houston area is prone to flooding. This means numerous homes and businesses struggle with mold well after the floodwaters have receded.
